Honorary Cultural Advisor for Japanese Taiko Heritage

Michael de Roo serves as the Honorary Cultural Advisor for Japanese Taiko Heritage within the Dutch Taiko Heritage Foundation. With a legacy spanning over four decades, Michael played a pivotal role in introducing authentic Japanese taiko drums to the Netherlands in the 1980s. His deep knowledge of taiko history and longstanding relationships with key figures and institutions in Japan make him a foundational figure in the development of Dutch taiko culture.

As a former conductor of the legendary production ‘Kaguyahime’ with the Netherlands Dance Theatre, and a teacher to groups such as Kodo and Hono Daiko, Michael’s influence reaches both artistic and educational realms. His personal connections to organizations such as Asano Taiko and Kodo continue to enrich the foundation’s cultural authenticity and international reach.

At 75 years of age, Michael is not only a historical guide but a living bridge between Japanese tradition and its modern expression in the Netherlands. His vision, experience, and lifelong dedication to taiko ensure that its cultural roots remain respected, while the art form continues to grow and inspire new generations.
